Overview

Kalsoom is a well respected and highly regarded family law practitioner specialising predominantly in public law proceedings and has been consistently recognised as a Tier 1 advocate in the Legal 500. She has appeared at all levels up to and including the Court of Appeal.

Prior to coming to the Bar, Kalsoom spent two years undertaking legal research and parliamentary work in industry. She was later commissioned by the Association of Personal Injury Lawyers to conduct a review of the Coroners’ system in England and Wales.

Kalsoom’s personal interests include overseas travel, reading and creative writing. She is fluent in Punjabi and has a good understanding of Urdu and Gujerati.

Family

Kalsoom regularly acts in cases of the utmost severity and complexity, and has a wealth of experience acting on all sides of these applications. She has extensive experience of dealing with demanding cases involving fatal injury cases, catastrophic injuries to children, complex sexual abuse, fabricated and induced illness, gender dysphoria and also cases involving significant harm from serious neglect and failure to protect.

Kalsoom is regularly instructed on behalf of local authorities and children to run cases against parents represented by both leading and junior counsel. She is highly regarded for her meticulous preparation of cases, high quality skeleton arguments and her ability to digest and analyse complex information with ease. Kalsoom has also developed an enviable reputation for skilled cross examination.

Whilst Kalsoom is extremely empathetic with clients, she is renowned for providing straightforward and realistic advice at every stage of a case.

Notable Cases

  • A Hospital Trust v P & Ors [2024] EWHC 313 (Fam)(15 February 2024) – represented the father, led by Jacqueline Thomas KC, in an application by the Hospital Trust to withdraw life-sustaining treatment from a little girl, who sustained catastrophic injuries whilst at home.
  • Manchester City Council v C – represented the children where the central allegation was that the mother had conspired with others to rob, torture and murder the children’s father.
  • Bolton MBC v H – represented the children, where the central allegation was that the father had shaken the baby causing catastrophic and life changing injuries to one of the children
  • Salford Council v J – represented the mother where the central allegation was that the mother had caused serious injuries to the child. Multiple medical experts and professional witnesses cross examined and exculpatory finding made in respect of the mother.
  • JF v SC – represented the father in private law proceedings where extremely grave allegations of coercive control, physical violence and forcing the mother to engage in sexual encounters with third party males. No findings made against the father.
