Since being called to the bar in 2004, Nic has developed a well-established, specialist practice in family law, focusing particularly on public law children cases. Nic is known for his determined, approachable, and pleasant manner with both clients and professionals. He uses thorough analysis, preparation, and presentation of the facts to achieve the best possible results for those he represents.

Nic prides himself on working collaboratively with solicitors, professionals and lay individuals, ensuring that complex issues are presented clearly and persuasively to the Court.

For the last five consecutive years, Nic has been ranked in the Legal 500 as a Tier 1 leading junior in family law and in Chambers & Partners as a Band 2 leading junior in Family: Children.

Family

Nic has developed a wide experience in all aspects of childcare proceedings including serious and complex cases representing parents, local authorities and children’s guardians. Nic is known for his direct and inquisitive approach in cross examination and is often instructed in contested hearings, where there are substantive disputes of fact.

Nic’s practice predominantly focuses on public law children cases involving serious non-accidental injuries to children, child fatalities, where one parent has killed the other, fabricated or induced illness, sexual abuse, chronic neglect and significant emotional harm. He is experienced in lengthy fact-finding hearings involving extensive expert medical evidence from multiple disciplines.

Such matters have received national coverage including the passing of Section 18 of the Victims and Prisoners Act 2024, which places a mandatory duty on the Crown Court to issue a Prohibited Steps Order at the point of sentencing, stripping the convicted parent of their parental responsibility, known as “Jade’s Law”. Such legislation is due to come into force in 2026.

Nic has appeared in a number of Hague Convention and cross-border jurisdiction cases and consistently undertakes work at the highest level of seriousness and complexity.

Nic routinely assists local authorities in respect of assessments and decision-making processes pre-proceedings and during the same.
