Yesterday evening, Nine Chambers hosted an event organised by Maguire Family Law, with Jane Mabon sitting on a panel of five professionals who advise families through separation.
The panel brought together the different areas of advice that can surround a family when a relationship ends: family law, tax and business valuation, wealth management, and wills, trusts and succession. Jane joined as the family barrister, alongside Denise Moran (Maguire Family Law), Nicola Walker (Private Client Solicitors), John McCaffery (Alexander & Co) and Tony Robinson (Alderley Private Wealth).
The discussion was built around a case study of a fictional family, the Ashfords. After a long marriage, their finances included a family company founded by the husband’s father and grown during the marriage, the family home, a pension, an inherited property, investments and a property abroad. The panel followed the family from the point the relationship came under strain through to reaching a settlement, looking at the questions that need answering before anything is agreed, including the future of the business, long-term financial security, the tax consequences of any transfers, and the effect on wills and succession plans.
The evening also covered common myths about divorce, where AI helps and where it falls short when advising clients, the panel’s advice for anyone facing separation, and questions from the audience.
Nine Chambers would like to give a special thank you to Eimear Maguire, Director of Maguire Family Law, who organised the event and brought the audience together. Thank you also to all of the panel members for taking part.
