Chief Executive Officer Opportunity – Nine Chambers, Manchester

Nine Chambers is appointing its first Chief Executive Officer — a pivotal leadership role shaping the future strategy and operational direction of one of the UK’s leading barristers’ chambers.

Based in Manchester, Nine Chambers comprises over 100 Barristers supported by 20 professional staff, delivering nationally recognised advisory and advocacy services.

The CEO will provide strategic leadership, strengthen operational governance, support practice management and administrative teams, and foster a collaborative, high‑performing professional culture.

This is an exceptional and exciting opportunity to establish and shape a new senior executive role, translate strategy into delivery, and further strengthen a collegiate, high-performing professional community.

The role

Lead the implementation of Chambers’ business strategy in close partnership with the Head of Chambers and the Management Committee, ensuring that agreed objectives are translated into coherent, deliverable plans.

  • Lead the creation and delivery of business development, marketing strategies and initiatives.
  • Be responsible for the effective leadership and development of Chambers’ practice management, finance and administrative teams to support Chambers’ development and growth.
  • Exercise overarching executive oversight of Chambers’ operations across clerking, administration, finance, IT and marketing; promoting clarity, consistency and proportionality in systems and processes to deliver the business strategy in the most effective way.
  • Play a prominent and visible role in fostering cohesive and collaborative working across Chambers, enhancing internal communication and reinforcing a strong sense of shared identity among barrister members and staff.

Key responsibilities

  • Shape and deliver Chambers’ medium and long-term business strategy, monitoring progress, identifying risks and constraints, and recommending adjustments where existing arrangements are no longer optimal.
  • Strengthen operational governance, including financial management, reporting, risk and compliance frameworks, in conjunction with the Treasurer and Chambers Manager.
  • Promote and support a professional, respectful and collaborative culture, grounded in transparent communication, clear accountability and confidence in management arrangements.

We are seeking a senior leader with proven operational leadership experience in a professional partnership or regulated environment, exceptional judgement, and the ability to build trust with autonomous professionals. Experience in barristers’ chambers is welcome but not essential.
