Jonathan Savage, instructed by CPS RASSO, prosecuted alone in the trial of Lawrence Skrzydlo at Minshull Street Crown Court, where a jury unanimously convicted the defendant of two counts of rape and eight counts of indecent assault, committed against a young girl between 1996 and 2000.
The abuse began when the complainant was around seven years old and continued over several years. The defendant, a trusted friend of the family, denied the offences throughout.
The case presented significant evidential challenges. Because the complainant was aged between seven and eleven at the time of the abuse, there were no records available to corroborate her account of where she was living, or where the defendant was working, in order to narrow down the timeframe of the offending. The memories of the complainant and the other prosecution witness were, understandably, limited when it came to detail — making this a case that turned on the credibility of the complainant’s account.
The trial began on 27 April 2026, and the defendant was convicted on all counts on 7 May 2026. On 3 July 2026, he was sentenced to 15 years’ imprisonment. Having heard the complainant read her Victim Personal Statement, the Judge concluded that she had suffered severe psychological harm as a result of the abuse and had been particularly vulnerable at the time, and reflected those findings in the sentence passed.
