Leeds Beckett University and the deceased’s GP were both interested parties at the inquest. The suicide followed a variety of issues involving mental health difficulties, a lack of engagement with academic studies, and escalating debt problems. The deceased’s GP accepted that she should have asked the deceased whether he had suicidal thoughts. The Coroner gave detailed findings and returned a Short Form Conclusion of suicide.
Julie-Anne invited the Coroner to issue a “Regulation 28 Report” to the Financial Conduct Authority – that is the body responsible for regulating payday loan companies. A Regulation 28 report, is a request for action to be taken, that is aimed at reducing the risk of future deaths. The bereaved family would like the Financial Conduct Authority to take action to stop payday loan companies granting unaffordable loans to students, and to force such companies to lend responsibly. The Coroner is considering this request.
