Matthew Curtis prosecuted a sexual offences trial involving allegations of offending committed during childhood.
The defendant was alleged to have committed sexual offences between the ages of 11 and 13 against a younger neighbour. The allegations were reported in 2021 following disclosure to the complainant’s parents. The defendant was interviewed while still a youth and denied the offences. The investigation continued before the matter came before the court.
The trial commenced on 1 December 2025. The complainant and members of her family gave evidence. The defendant also gave evidence, along with his foster mother.
Following trial, the defendant was convicted and became subject to the notification requirements under the Sexual Offences Act 2003. Sentence was adjourned for the preparation of a pre-sentence report.
On 22 January 2026, the defendant was sentenced to a community order. Matthew prepared a sentencing note addressing the relevant sentencing guidelines in cases where an offender passes a significant age threshold between the date of the offences and sentence. This note was adopted by the defence and assisted the court.
The complainant delivered a Victim Personal Statement and elected to waive her right to anonymity under the Sexual Offences (Amendment) Act 1992.
