Nine Chambers is pleased to welcome Michael Smith as a new tenant.
Michael practises exclusively in serious personal injury litigation, with a developing practice in clinical negligence. He has been in practice since 2017 and is regularly instructed in complex and high-value claims, most commonly up to £500,000, with experience in cases exceeding £1 million. When instructed timeously, Michael also represents clients at inquests.
Michael has significant experience in life-changing injury claims, including brain injury, polytrauma, amputation, orthopaedic injuries and persistent pain disorders. He is particularly well regarded for his handling of complex causation issues, record-heavy cases, and his clear and reliable advice on costs budgeting.
Acting for both Claimants and Defendants, Michael is known for his approachable manner and his ability to explain complex issues in clear, practical terms. His experience on both sides of litigation has also given him a strong understanding of the commercial realities faced by insurer clients, including reserving considerations.
Earlier in his career, Michael acted exclusively for insurers in insurance fraud and fundamental dishonesty cases, all of which were successfully defended at trial. This background continues to inform his approach to serious and higher-value personal injury litigation.
