Overview
Katie Walden joined Chambers as a tenant in October 2023 following completion of pupillage under the supervision of Simon Blakebrough. She has been recognised for her well-prepared and pragmatic approach to cases and her personable manner with clients.
Katie has a commitment to access to justice and has worked on numerous pro bono projects. She worked as a Coordinator for the University of Birmingham Free Legal Advice Group, an intern for Advocate, and she researched and assisted in drafting a submission to the United Nations Working Group on Arbitrary Detention, which was accepted in its entirety by the Group (opinion 70/2021). Prior to the Bar, Katie worked for the Welsh Government on social welfare policy.
Outside of work she enjoys CrossFit, supporting the Welsh rugby team and reading.
Criminal
Katie is a CPS Level 2 Panel member for General Crime and Serious Crime.
She has developed a broad criminal practice, both prosecuting and defending a range of offences including violent offences, controlling and coercive behaviour, possession of weapons, possession and supply of drugs, dishonesty offences and dangerous dogs. She has conducted trials in the Magistrates and Crown Courts. She has also acted in applications for sexual risk orders and criminal behaviour orders.
R v MG [2024]: Made a successful submission of no case to answer on behalf of a defendant found in his car with Class A drugs and charged with PWITS.
R v JN [2024]: Defended one of 7 defendants in a joint enterprise robbery trial. All others entered guilty pleas before trial. The defendant was acquitted.
R v JH [2023]: Prosecuted a PWITS Class B case involving 240 pills found in the defendant’s possession at Creamfields Festival. The defendant received 30 months immediate custody.
R v CM [2023]: Represented a defendant in POCA proceedings and negotiated an agreement that reduced the defendant’s benefit amount by over £120,000.
R v RD [2023]: Following an affray trial where the defendant admitted brandishing a knife, Katie secured an acquittal having advanced an argument of self-defence.
R v DB [2023]: Secured a suspended sentence for a defendant convicted of possession of a knife and affray.
Inquests and Public Inquiries
During pupillage, Katie observed and assisted counsel representing a mother and father in a 3 day inquest where a finding of neglect was made against a doctor in the Coroners Court.
